What is an Argument?

Arguments are not always just two or maybe even or people going back and forth about something. From my understanding, an argument is a way of trying to persuade the other person or people. For example, one person might like strawberries, and another person might not like strawberries. The person that likes strawberries is going to try to give reasons as to why the other person should like strawberries, trying to persuade him or her into liking strawberries. The person trying to persuade is creating an argument as to why the other person should like strawberries. I used to thinks that an argument was just two or more people disagreeing about something, but there's a lot more to it than that. If I want to look at an argument that way then I would call it a contradiction, which is a disagreement. An example of contradiction is someone saying strawberries are good, but they don't like strawberries. They went against themselves by saying they don't like strawberries, yet they think they taste good, so therefore they contradicted themselves. This is the typical type of argument that a lot of people think about but confuse with what an actual argument is. Or people can look at it as a quarrel, which is an angry exchange, which is what most people tend to do. There are many forms of arguments, like trying to persuade, getting into a heated exchange of word, etc., and before college I knew about the persuasive type and the contradicting. When I would here the word "argument" I normally think of people going back and forth about something that might have happened the night before, but I know have a better understanding of the different types of arguments there are.
